Native Universe (NU) was designed to build institutional capacity in leadership and practice among scientific museums, in order to increase public understanding of environmental change and the human relationship to nature from Indigenous perspectives, while also providing access to science as practiced in the established scientific community.

The aim of this project is to foster activities in science museums through which public audiences can engage with scientists and engineers in conversations about what synthetic biology is, how research is carried out, and the potential products, outcomes, and implications for society of this work. This document is developing one of many possible conceptual frameworks for public engagement with science, which is referred to as a “typology.” This typology is designed to help scientists develop a basic sense of the various options to effectively engage public audiences and thus understand the landscape of public engagement with science.

The project studied middle-school students using the Waves exhibit in order to understand how interacting with functional metaphors in a mixed reality environment impacts conceptual change, motivation, and scientific habits of mind while engaged in learning physics content.
