Developing the ability to read and critically assess science-themed media reports is of great importance, given the media’s pervasive and powerful influence on people’s beliefs and behaviours. This study examines a technique designed to develop high school students’ critical reading abilities. Findings suggest a progression from blind belief toward the ability to draw conclusions based on scientific information.
This study examined the validity of the Draw-A-Scientist Test (DAST), which is commonly used to capture students’ perceptions of scientists. Findings suggest that the DAST is not valid as a sole measurement. The originally identified stereotypical traits are no longer widely held by students.
The purpose of the summative evaluation is to two-fold: 1) provide documentation to NSF about the extent to which the project met its goals and objectives, and 2) give the Lab of Ornithology information about how well the Web application and the ecosystem within which it resides is engaging the intended audiences. The main evaluation questions the study needed to answer related to who is participating in YardMap, how much participation affects participants’ knowledge, attitudes and behaviors around birding, gardening, and citizen science.

Salehjee and Watts collected 12 personal biographies that provide rich descriptions of the different paths—direct or more wavering—that individuals follow. The implications of this study suggest that the informal science sector needs to “keep doors open” for individuals at transition points.
Citizen science has grown significantly as an area of activity around the world with many different models of practice and forms of participation. Citizen involvement in science can be seen as part of a long history of the role of the amateur in science. This poster was presented at the 2016 Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) PI Meeting held in Bethesda, MD on February 29-March 2. Dr. Discovery addresses the immediate and pressing need for affordable, ongoing, large-scale museum evaluation while encouraging visitors to engage deeply with museum content. The app features a front-end scientist astronaut for use by museum visitors that doubles as an unobtrusive data-gatherer as well as a back-end analytics portal for museum staff, evaluators, and researchers.

This poster was presented at the 2016 Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) PI Meeting held in Bethesda, MD on February 29-March 2. REVEAL is using a two-phase research design, including a phase 1 design-based research study followed by a phase 2 experimental study, to investigate and measure the impact of staff facilitation on family mathematical discourse at exhibits and identify factors that influence the outcomes of these interactions.
