A new online and mobile resource for teens, Sparticl presents the best science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) resources on the web. A team of experts has hand-selected articles, videos, games, hands-on activities, and other content that is age-appropriate, accurate, safe, and engaging. Teens and educators can explore and investigate, share and contribute—all the while earning points and badges.
The site is designed to allow teens to easily rate, comment on, and share their favorite games, articles, and activities. Users can create their own customized collections and submit new resources. The goal of Sparticl is to create an online destination that is irresistible to kids and valued by parents, teachers, and the scientific community, a destination where providers of high-quality STEM content will be proud to be included. Sparticl is created by the National Productions division of Twin Cities Public Television and is made possible with the generous support of 3M.

This poster was presented at the 2016 Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) PI Meeting held in Bethesda, MD on February 29-March 2. The third season of the national PBS series, SciGirls, is the first national children’s television series and website designed to engage and educate millions of children about citizen science. In each half-hour episode, a female mentor guides a group of ethnically diverse middle school girls as they learn about citizen science protocols and collect and share data for an established citizen science project. "Il ciclotrone" is the weekly science programme of "Radio Popolare - Popolare Network". During the last 12 years, once or twice a month listeners have been able to directly ask questions to the guest scientists in the studios, or to express their point of view on some controversial scientific issue. Phone-ins at Radio Popolare are not filtered; regular and occasional listeners are used to communicate with or through the radio, and in doing so they contribute to the sense of spontaneity which characterise the programmes.

The 40-minute film shows the techniques and methods that special effects filmmakers use to create movie illusions. As part of a focus group exploratory study into the feasibility of presenting to the public an on-going review of new findings or issues in major fields of science research, 128 adult participants noted which two of ten contemporary science research areas they were most interested in. Of note is the fact that all classification variables (except gender) were unrelated to topic appeal. Interest in each research topic was not influenced by age; educational level; minority/majority grouping; total household income; occupational status; and perceived need for science knowledge in one's employment

The impact of four half-hour science programs aired on commercial children's radio was assessed by Dr. Barbara Flagg of Multimedia Research in a causal-comparative between-groups study with prebroadcast and postbroadcast questionnaires. Of 253 fourth graders, 34% listened to one or more shows of the Kinetic City Super Crew series. Significantly more girls listened than boys. Listeners and Non-listeners did not differ on background variables of ethnic status, science attitudes, science reading and television viewing, and participation in seven of eight common at-home science activities

This dissertation focuses on an integral aspect of public opinion formation — individual selectivity of information. Principally, I seek answers about why individuals opt for certain media. Broadly, my research is guided by the following question: How do communication contexts and individual traits contribute to and motivate individuals’ selectivity? Though there have been many studies on the phenomenon of selective exposure in political science and political communication, my research is conducted in the context of a scientific issue. Conversation and controversy surround the increasing focus on high-stakes standardized testing, whose effects may include less class time for science, narrower curricula, and shifts in instructional styles. In this paper, Judson finds that teachers in states with science accountability standards report at a significantly higher rate than teachers in other states that they spend four or more hours per week on science.

Through a study of 14 preschool classrooms serving low-income children from diverse ethnic backgrounds, the authors illustrate how carefully incorporating play-based learning into curricula can improve both literacy and social competence skills. The results illuminate how to more deeply engage learners with informal science education.

The fact that inquiry-based science teaching has been defined in various ways makes claims about its effectiveness with students difficult to synthesize. In this meta-analysis, the authors generate a two-dimensional framework to analyze studies of the effectiveness of inquiry-based science instruction in improving student learning outcomes.

Large-scale assessments like PISA are highly influential in policymaking, but they don’t tell us anything about the nature of student learning underpinning the scores. In this study, an additional instrument was administered to students in Finland, Germany, and Switzerland. Finnish students, who score higher on PISA, also scored higher on the second assessment. Findings suggest that Finnish students may have developed more complex knowledge bases in science.
