This short video entitled "Urban Science for the Hip-Hop Generation: The Documentary" provides an overview of a research program led by Chris Emdin of Teacher's College in NYC. Professor Emdin has designed a science program that builds on students' cultural and personal resources to engage students in STEM learning from a position of familiarity and strength. This is a powerful example of making STEM culturally relevant to students as a way to engage and excite them in learning.
This article explores the development of self-esteem and confidence in the context of an afterschool sports program for adolescent girls. The program focuses on boosting girls' perceived competence and improving skills related to career development, particularly networking.
This article describes Philadelphia’s systemwide approach to project-based learning. First, we review the scholarly literature to define the strategy and discuss its outcomes. Next, we describe Philadelphia’s systems approach to project-based learning in OST and outline its successes. Finally, we discuss the challenges presented by a systems approach to implementation, offering recommendations to other cities and their intermediaries that wish to implement project-based learning on a systemwide basis.
Supervising youth workers is a challenging, demanding job in a complex field. Too frequently youth workers get mired in reacting to the everyday crises that dominate their work, finding it difficult to rise above the daily demands to reach a place where reflection can help guide their work. Strategies based in action research can empower youth work supervisors to invest in their own growth and in the continuous improvement of their programs.
Exemplary career programming overcomes the obstacles to engaging older youth and shows them how to find the "next rung on the ladder." This article draws from several disciplines to integrate what is and is not known about engaging youth in career programming during out-of-school time.

Based on lessons learned from more than a decade of OST STEM programming for urban youth, Project Exploration proposes an alternative to the pipeline: Youth-Science Pathways. This article is a review of the 2011 book "Better Together: A Model University-Community Partnership for Urban Youth" by Barbara Jentleson. Better Together examines in depth the first decade of the Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership (DDNP), focusing on its involvement with six community-based afterschool programs sponsored by Duke’s Project HOPE (Holistic Opportunities Plan for Enrichment). The primary aim of Project HOPE was to provide academic support to Durham’s low-income minority youth.
Our study looks at how participation in a continuous quality improvement initiative produces higher-quality practice in Rhode Island’s afterschool community by fostering change in program management practices. Among other findings, we discovered that quality improvement begins with program managers, who then lead the process of change.
By designing accountability systems that fully embrace the notion of afterschool programs as learning organizations and by using research from organizational development, education, and youth development to create effective learning environments, funders and sponsors can help programs to improve quality—and therefore, to succeed in their goal of achieving better outcomes for young people.
