This is a recording of a NISE Network online brown-bag conversation held in December 2014 about the International Year of Light. In 2013, the United Nations proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light (IYL). More than 100 organizations from more than 85 countries are participating in IYL. During this conversation we discussed scientific organizations that would make great partners for IYL events, shared light-related activities and videos developed by the NISE Network, and talked about the science behind some of those activities.
The NISE Network has developed numerous activities and programs suggestions for the International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies (IYL 2015). The International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies (IYL 2015) is a global initiative that will highlight to the citizens of the world the importance of light and optical technologies in their lives, for their futures, and for the development of society. It is an unique opportunity to inspire, educate, and connect on a global scale.
This article describes a partnership between Seton Hall University and the Liberty Science Center to engage preservice teachers in teaching and learning science. The partnership program offered preservice teachers the opportunity to interact with displays and demonstrations, teach and interact with the public, participate in professional development activities, and communicate with diverse groups.

Using data from interviews with 133 physicists and biologists working at elite research universities in the United States, we analyze narratives of outreach. We identify discipline-specific barriers to outreach and gender-specific rationales for commitment. Physicists view outreach as outside of the scientific role and a possible threat to reputation. Biologists assign greater value to outreach, but their perceptions of the public inhibit commitment. Finally, women are more likely than men to participate in outreach, a commitment that often results in peer-based informal sanctions. The study

A Study of Communication in the NISE Network (Network Communication Study), conducted during the sixth year of the grant, sought to learn how the four primary communication components that were developed in the first 5 years of NISE Net (NanoDays, face-to-face meetings, the regional hub structure, and the nisenet.org website) are functioning within the Network. In particular, the study explored how these components communicate information, ideas, and practices related to NISE Net between and within the three Network tiers.
Creating Museum Media for Everyone (CMME) is a proof-of-concept collaborative project between the Museum of Science (MOS) in Boston, WGBH's National Center for Accessible Media (NCAM) and Ideum (Funded by NSF-DRL, award number 1114549). The project aims to show how digital interactive museum exhibit devices can be designed and developed for visitors who have a wide range of disabilities.
