This exploratory study is designed to determine attributes of large urban school districts which would maximize the probability of success for implementing and sustaining major educational reforms. The study will include personal interviews with key change agents in a number of such school districts where changes have been attempted and will identify attributes which lead to failure as well as those which lead to success. The project will culminate with a draft document of an "Urban School District Systemic Reform Initiative in Science and Mathematics" which incorporates findings, in NSF solicitation format.

In 2002, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Delta Research and Educational Foundation (DREF), in partnership with the AAAS, under funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), began the Science and Everyday Experiences (SEE) Initiative. SEE helps those involved with African American elementary and middle school age children (K-8) develop effective ways to support the children's informal science learning experiences.

The second round of NISE Network Regional workshops were held during the winter of 2009 at the Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS), The Franklin Institute (TFI), and the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History (FW). The regional workshops were developed to address five goals. Formative evaluation was carried out to measure the success in meeting these goals. The evaluation was carried out using a mixed-methods design. This report provides an overview of the findings from the formative evaluation of the RISE Public Communication Internship conducted at the Museum of Science in January from January 20-23, 2009. The internship was created as a result of a partnership between the Strategic Projects Department at the Museum of Science and the NSF Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center headquartered at Harvard University, and was supported by a sub-award from the Center, to the Museum of Science. Roberts propose new ways of thinking about how leaders and followers across the institution take and support initiative. According to the authors, investment in museum leadership is in effect an investment in museums as leaders in their communities.

The Interactive Video Science Consortium is a non-profit group of fifteen science centers and museums that proposes to develop interactive video exhibits about Earth and Planetary sciences with two purposes in mind. One, the video exhibits on the two subject areas will serve as educational vehicles for four million visitors, representing the combined audiences of the fifteen participating museums. Two, through extensive testing and visitor research during the development process the consortium members will enlarge understanding of the appropriate and effective uses of the interactive video medium in science museums. Consortium members will fund the costs of conducting research on the subject matter and producing the first two discs. The request to the National Science Foundation is for the systematic analysis of the effectiveness of this type of program and of the educational impact of the medium in science museums.

In this article, David James Whitemyer, Director of Production at Christopher Chadbourne and Associates, examines the question of whether or not exhibit designers should "professionalize" (i.e. require degrees, licenses). Whitemyer looks to other professions as models, and ultimately, calls on individuals to take more responsibility for maintaining high "standards" and continuing to push their skill set and knowledge base.
