The purpose of this evaluation conducted at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History was to find out how visitors are behaving in, reacting to and learning from the newly reopened Sant Ocean Hall. To do this, three methods were employed: a) timing and tracking, b) exit interviews and c) focused studies for specific exhibits and experiences. A total of 553 unique visitors were included in the study, with data collection occurring in December 2008 and January 2009. Starting in the summer of 2008, the DMNS enactor program began to be implemented throughout DMNS' diorama halls. Aligned with the 100th anniversary of the Museum, the enactor team began to portray turn-of-the-century characters to engage and educate visitors in the dioramas and permanent galleries.The Visitor Programs Department, who manage the enactor program, outlined several goals for the program in the diorama halls prior to the study: 1. A Participatory Model for Integrating Cognitive Research into Exhibits for Children was a model that the Museum of Science proposed to the National Science Foundation's Informal Science Education Program (NSF-ISE) in the Fall of 2006. How People Make Things is an exhibition that helps families talk together and learn about the making of everyday objects.
