This paper examines the experiences reported by scientists and graduate students regarding the experiences that first engaged them in science. The interviews analyzed for this paper come from Project Crossover, a mixed‐methods study of the transition from graduate student to PhD scientist in the fields of chemistry and physics. Social science research into public understanding of animal cognition has tended toward a disciplinary focus with conceptual frameworks, questionnaires, concepts and categories that do not appear to align with the findings emerging from the scientific study of animal cognition. The authors analyzed the proposed broader impacts of proposals funded by NSF's Ecosystems Studies Program (i.e. the activities that provide benefice to society through teaching, broadening participation, enhancing infrastructure, and disseminating research).
