This paper reports findings from a study at the Exploratorium of a single physics exhibit that compared three labels and assessed visitors' attitudes and behavior. Based on interviews with 60 visitors, evaluators found a preference for labels containing both questions and suggestions, but that this type of phrasing may not always affect visitor behavior.

This paper discusses the influence of mutual communication on exhibit development and evaluation. It discusses how mutual communication techniques helped developers at the Impression 5 Science Museum see the production of "SPIN," a traveling hands-on exhibit about rotational motion, through the eyes of the visitor and imagine ways of generating visitor-object and visitor-developer dialogues in the exhibit.

In this paper, Jeff Bonner of the St. Louis Science Center discusses the merits of formal versus naturalistic evaluation within the museum context. Bonner also presents the approach and findings of a two-part study designed to compare the results of these two evaluation approaches. They compared the the results of a formal analysis of the holding power, ease of use, readability of text, and overall enjoyability of nine exhibits with a naturalistic study focused on how one volunteer, two part-time employees and a staff supervisor viewed the same exhibits.

Dynamic Patterns Theatre, an independent production company, is bringing a unique educational and entertainment experience to Central Illinois with upcoming performances of QED: A Play by Peter Parnell. Featuring a day in the life of Nobel Laureate Richard Feynman, the show interweaves strands from his professional biography, including the Manhattan project and the Challenger inquiry, and provides a window into many of his personal emotions and challenges, all the while offering several great discussions of physics ideas presented for a general audience. As the first production of a new "Science at the Theatre Series", QED (which stands for quantum electrodynamics, the physics model for which Feynman was awarded the Nobel Prize) will be incorporated with a unique informal educational opportunity along with the traditional theatrical experience for patrons to enjoy. Dynamic Patterns Theatre is collaborating with local physicists and teachers to host an informal forum highlighting aspects of Feynman's life and career and feature science topics discussed in the play. With an interactive format of "Ask a Physicist", patrons will be free to ask the panel any questions they might have about science for a unique opportunity to increase their appreciation for science and how the Universe works, if only just a bit. "My academic background is in physics, so I am personally excited to merge my theatre and science interests into a new cultural event that has not be attempted before in Central Illinois", said Matthew T. Dearing, co-producer of dynamic patterns theatre and director for QED. Richard Feynman is portrayed by Al Scheider, a long-time regional actor from Decatur who has performed in over sixty community theatre productions in thirty-seven years, and has directed theater for twelve years. The supporting role of Miriam Field, a young Caltech student, is played by Lynexia Dawn Chigges, who is an LPN with Memorial Physician Services, and has performed on stages from San Diego to Springfield, Illinois. QED: A Play performs for three weekends in three communities, with the opening on September 13, 14 at 8:00 pm in Springfield at the Hoogland Center for the Arts, September 20, 21 at 7:30 pm in Jacksonville at the Playhouse on the Square, and October 4, 5 at 8:00 pm in Decatur and the Madden Arts Center.

Roto, an exhibition design and production firm, contracted Randi Korn & Associates, Inc. (RK&A) to conduct a front-end evaluation of Speed, an exhibition being developed for The Science Museum of Virginia (SMV) in Richmond, Virginia. RK&A explored visitors’ thoughts, perceptions, and understandings of exhibition concepts related to speed, defined as change over time. How did we approach this study? In this paper, Minda Borun of the Franklin Institute discusses the publics' naive notions of science and how museums provide the opportune place to study the pre-existing misconceptions of visitors of all ages. Borun reveals findings from the Franklin Institute's 18-month study to discover visitors' naive notions about gravity and air pressure and to develop exhibits which help restructure these concepts. The project is intended to establish a new model for the design of effective science museum exhibits.

This paper presents findings from a label study project at the Franklin Institute Science Museum, part of the Naive Knowledge Research Project, funded by NSF to identify "naive notions" about science, in particular the cause and nature of gravity, and test the power of interactive devices to alter them. The device which prompted this label study was designed to correct the misconception that spinning pulls things in and, more specifically, that the earth's rotation generates its gravitational pull.

This paper presents the methodology and findings of an evaluation of the "Invisible Forces" exhibition at the California Museum of Science and Industry. The exhibit was designed to convey specific concepts related to electricity and magnetism, capture visitor interest for durations of 15 minutes or more of continuous use, be self-contained and comprehensible without reference to other exhibits or extensive text, and appeal to a broad range of ages and backgrounds.

In this paper, Sara Gaspar Hernandez discusses how cultural differences between social groups influence vistiors' experienes at science museums. Hernandez discuses methods used at her institution, UNIVERSUM Science Museum in Mexico City, to study, create and sustain exhibits that are respectful of individual and group differences. Findings from an evaluation of an exhibit on eclipses are outlined.

This is a summary of A.W. Melton's 1936 paper, "Distribution of Attention in Galleries in a Museum of Science and Industry." Melton studied the role of movement in attracting visitors by evaluating a gear-shaper located in the machine tool section of the New York Museum of Science and Industry. Melton determined that while any kind of movement attracts visitors, the overall consequences of this movement on the exhibit may not be be positive.
