This is the final report from the external evaluator of the project that created MedLab, an interactive learning experiences for Chicago area middle and high school students. The Croucher Foundation recently embarked on a research study to explore informal science learning in Hong Kong. This is the first study to focus on the out-of-school ecosystem for science learning in Hong Kong. This exploratory and investigative study identified over a thousand out-of-school STEM activities that happened between June 2015 and May 2016, including courses, workshops and exhibitions available to Hong Kong school students over this twelve-month period. The Exploratorium, in collaboration with the city of San Francisco, the Tenderloin and Civic Center communities, and national museum-community partners, are excited to announce Middle Ground: Experiments in Urban Social Science (fka Street Smarts), a project to bring research on social psychology to public urban environments. Middle Ground combines recent work by the Exploratorium in social science exhibitry and urban learning spaces to develop a novel contribution to science learning in public spaces. The project will produce an outdoor learning installation in front of San Francisco City Hall that will serve the exceptionally diverse audiences that frequent the area. The installation will be populated with exhibits that engage this public in social observation and participatory experiences, promoting learning about the science of social polarization, social dilemmas, and social norms. The project will also produce an online "Guide to People Watching" for the general public, with additional materials to support professionals in the creation of social science learning experiences. The project will be supported by a community of practice of professionals engaged in educational place-making. Finally, Middle Ground will produce new research on how to design experiences that prompt structured, quasi-scientific social observation skills and foster empathy for the social experience of others.

This report presents findings from an evaluation of the Maximizing Collective Impact Through Cross-Sector Partnerships planning meeting conducted by RK&A, Inc. for the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement (NCSCE). The meeting, which took place in March 2017, was funded through the National Science Foundation's Advancing Informal STEM Learning Program (NSF-AISL 1612376), brought together individuals from NCSCE's SENCER/SENCER-ISE network, NISE Net, and other networks to leverage the expertise and insights of participants and imagine and articulate ideas for cross-network projects.
The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) contracted Randi Korn & Associates, Inc. (RK&A) to conduct reflective case studies of the Outpost, a mobile art museum that took up temporary residence at a variety of sites across Baltimore from 2014-2016. At each site, visitors to the Outpost had the opportunity to view reproductions of artworks from the museum’s collection, make art, and share their experiences of place, home, and life in Baltimore.

Campaigns by zoos, aquariums, and other civil society organizations are an important tool for promoting social changes that benefit the environment. Here, we evaluate a global biodiversity education campaign's impact through a repeated-measures survey of nearly 5000 visitors to 20 zoos and aquariums located in 14 countries. By comparing visitors’ pre- and post-visit responses combined across respondents, we found significant aggregate improvements in their biodiversity understanding and their knowledge of actions to help protect biodiversity.
