Stormchasers follows scientists as they investigate the dramatic weather effects of monsoons, hurricanes, and tornadoes. As part of a focus group exploratory study into the feasibility of presenting to the public an on-going review of new findings or issues in major fields of science research, 128 adult participants noted which two of ten contemporary science research areas they were most interested in. Of note is the fact that all classification variables (except gender) were unrelated to topic appeal. Interest in each research topic was not influenced by age; educational level; minority/majority grouping; total household income; occupational status; and perceived need for science knowledge in one's employment
Using focus group methodology, exploratory research was carried out to assess the feasibility and viability of presenting to the public an on-going review of new findings or issues in major fields of science research. Earth & Sky is a two-minute public radio science series about environmental sciences, earth sciences, and astronomy. As broadcast of the series expanded across the U.S., Multimedia Research implemented summative evaluations of listeners in three different radio markets. The evaluations focus on whether listening to the series influences adults' knowledge of, interest in, and attitudes toward science and whether the series affects listeners' science-related activities.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is one of the world's largest experimental facilities, where thousands of scientists and engineers from over 100 countries collaborate to shed new light on the workings of our universe. As LHC research, such as the discovery of the Higgs boson, continues to hit the news in future years, it will be important for educators in informal science institutions to understand how to engage their visiting public's interests and curiosities and shape their understanding regarding this leading edge research. Naturalists act as our link between scientific knowledge and the public’s understanding of natural history and conservation efforts. In order for them to succeed, they need access to reference materials as well as up-to-date information (Mankin, Warner, & Anderson, 1999). Incorporating mobile technology (i.e. tablets) into naturalists’ endeavors in natural history and environmental education can be used as supportive and educational tools. The Space Science Institute is developing an astronomy educational social game for the Facebook platform. The game uses the "sporadic play" model popular with many Facebook games, in which players take only a few actions at a time, then return to explore the results. Here players will create their own stars and planetary systems that evolve over time at a rate of a million years a minute. Players set systems in motion, revisiting the game over days or weeks to make new choices and alter strategies. The game is in effect an end-to-end solar system simulation, following a star from birth to death. As a result it encompasses a wide variety of core concepts in astronomy, including galactic structure, stellar evolution and lifecycles, planetary formation and evolution, and habitability and "habitable zones." The accompanying research program will examine the effectiveness of this type of game in informal education, and the effects of the social network on meeting the education goals, including viral spread, cooperative play, and discussions about the game and its underlying content in associated online forums.
This Connecting Researchers and Public Audiences project will engage the public in understanding how species are born. The project builds on the PI's NSF-funded research on speciation and signal diversification in Monarcha Flycatchers of the Solomon Islands (NSF CAREER, #1137624). Project deliverables include a one-hour television program, website, and the use of social media. The team proposes to film an engaging tale that weaves historical research with modern molecular techniques to communicate to the public how new species are born. It will also illustrate the process of science and the people behind the research. The potential national audience is large, with a particular effort to reach 18-49 year olds. The program will be nationally distributed by one of the major television or cable channels. The website will provide a video gallery of short videos and photos, a blog from the field, and an in-depth learning section with new research about speciation. Evaluation of the project, conducted by Education Northwest, will focus on changes in audience knowledge and interest about speciation. The findings of the summative evaluation will be made available online at InformalScience.org.
