Antarctic Dinosaurs: A Giant Screen Film and Outreach Project aims to leverage the popularity and charisma of dinosaurs to draw museum audiences into a captivating educational journey, revealing the history and transformation of Antarctica and the planet’s polar ecosystems, and exploring the forces that continue to shape the continent. In addition to bringing to life a wealth of unfamiliar dinosaurs, amphibians and proto-mammals, this project will journey beyond the bones to reveal a more nuanced, multi-disciplinary interpretation of paleontology and Antarctica’s profound changes.

The Signing Glossaries are six new apps researched and developed for families with at least one member who is deaf and hard of hearing. Each glossary provides access to thousands of signed terms and definitions encountered in visits to aquariums, botanical gardens, natural history museums, nature centers, science museums, and zoos.

It’s a great job when you get to do stuff just for fun. For the last few days, I’ve been at the Science Museum of Minnesota, consulting on their new exhibit? Theatrical performance? Interactive game? called Infestation: The Evolution Begins. It’s a 3-part project funded by NSF to help teach key concepts of evolution to kids, and it’s looking pretty amazing.The first part is done, and it’s a theatrical event where the concepts are explained entertainingly, and the audience are introduced to little imaginary creatures called VISTAs. The Explore Science: Let’s Do Chemistry project is a design-based research study creating both chemistry hands-on activities and a theoretical framework about strategies that promote increases in public interest, understandings of relevance, and feelings of self-efficacy about chemistry. This poster, which was presented at the 2019 NSF AISL Principal Investigators Meeting, shared the design-based research process for the ChemAttitudes project and asked how we can promote use of project findings and products beyond the life of the grant.
Science museums have made a concerted effort to work with researchers to incorporate current scientific findings and practices into informal learning opportunities for museum visitors. Many of these efforts have focused on creating opportunities and support for researchers to interact face-to-face with the public through, for example, speaker series, community forums, and engineering competitions. In the From Project Mercury to Planet Mars project, the Museum of Science is partnering with national leaders to create two resources, each geared to a different style of learner, that strengthen engineering education and immersive experiences in the nation’s informal education environment. The Museum of Science is collaborating with the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum and Albert Einstein Planetarium in Washington D.C., the Clark Planetarium in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Adventure Science Center and Sudekum Planetarium in Nashville, Tennessee, and the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, California. Through the development of a Planetarium show engaging audiences in the excitement of a human journey to Mars, and a large-scale engineering design challenge activity that allows participants to create design solutions to a Mars exploration challenge, the goal of From Project Mercury to Planet Mars is to increase student and public awareness of human space exploration and inspire the next generation of engineers and scientists. Planetarium show viewers are expected to demonstrate an increased appreciation and interest in future activities in engineering and science, and learn about the technical challenges of space exploration. Design challenge participants are expected to actively engage in the engineering design process and in engineering habits of mind.
The Museum of Science, Boston led the From Project Mercury to Planet Mars: Introducing Engineering and Inspiring Youth through Humanity’s Greatest Adventure project (FPMPM) as a way to produce and share high-quality informal engineering education opportunities about the topic of human space travel to Mars. This paper summarizes a study from 1987 on the Exploratorium's Explainer program. The Explainers serve as the primary staff available to the public on the floor of the museum. The purpose of the study was to determine whether science museums, through such programs, can significantly affect students' social development, their attitudes toward science, and their interest in science, teaching and museums. The study examines the impact of the Exploratorium on a group of students who may spend as much time in the museum as in school, and examined the program to understand its impact on the
