Leading science educators from 9 South and Southeastern Asian countries and the U.S. met for three days in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (October 4-6, 2017) in an effort to rethink and re-envision science education in the 21st Century. A significant body of innovative and potentially useful research about inclusion and diversity is surfacing in museum studies graduate programs across the country. This research often reflects the changing demographics of American society and our growing awareness of the complex dimensions of identity. However, the work is rarely available in venues or formats that are useful to museum practitioners, researchers, and decision-makers. To fill this gap in information sharing, we will conduct a qualitative meta-analysis of Master’s and Doctoral theses that address issues of personal and group identity and representation in museums, followed by interviews with a sample of the authors. This work will describe the ways museums represent and respond to issues of personal and group identity, with a particular focus on looking for evidence of impact and successful and emerging practices. A second goal is to understand how the engagement in the process of research influences the subsequent practice of current professionals.

Why do scientists volunteer to be involved in public engagement in science? What are the barriers that can prevent them participating in dialogue with society? What can be done to facilitate their participation? We report the outcomes of a series of focus groups conducted with the young scientists who volunteered in SISSA for schools (S4S), the Children's University program of the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Trieste, Italy.

The San Diego Natural History Museum contracted RK&A to conduct an evaluation of the SPECTRUM Social Stories Project. The program involved a series of 16 “meetups” for museum staff and young adults with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to visit seven Balboa Park museums. The young adults, with support from museum staff, used their observations of those spaces to create pre-visit materials for museum-goers with ASD.

Big Data, Big Screens, Open Ears project employs a variety of informal learning experiences to present the physics of sound and the new science of soundscape ecology. The interdisciplinary science of soundscape ecology analyzes sounds over time in different ecosystems around the world. The major components of the Global Soundscapes project are an educator-led interactive giant-screen theater show, group activities, and websites. The "Expanding Repertoires COV Final Brief" is a report by the Committee of Visitors for the NSF Pathways project, "Expanding Repertoires of Practice: Improving Informal Science Learning Experiences for Preschool Dual Language Learners." As an exploratory research project, the Committee of Visitors - or COV - provided critical, reflective review on the progress of the project and served as the de facto evaluator for the project.
The San Diego Natural History Museum (The Nat) contracted RK&A to conduct a summative evaluation of the temporary exhibition, Unshelved: Cool Stuff from Storage. The priorities for the study focused on exploring (1) whether visitors understand that the museum has vast collections (and why); (2) how the low level of interpretation effects visitors’ experiences and understanding of the exhibition; and (3) visitors’ personal connections and emotional response to the exhibition.

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art recently completed a renovation of its 19th- and early-20th-century European art galleries (the Bloch Galleries). The renovation includes the incorporation of the Marion and Henry Bloch Collection, a major gift of 29 masterworks by leading Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists. As part of this renovation project, the museum took the opportunity to experiment with new visitor engagement and interpretation strategies, including both digital and print approaches.
