Gardeners visit this site and report what varieties perform well - and not so well - in their gardens. Other gardeners visit to view the variety ratings and read the reviews to decide which might work well for them. The VVfG citizen science project also provides an opportunity for researchers to involve knowledgeable, motivated citizens in meaningful scientific research. Research on the performance of vegetable varieties is often limited to commercial production in part, because visiting thousands of home gardens to collect data would be an overwhelming task.
DEC conducts the Summer Wild Turkey Sighting Survey annually during the month of August to estimate the average number of wild turkey poults (young of the year) per hen statewide and among major geographic regions of the State. This index allows us to gauge reproductive success in a given year and allows us to predict fall harvest potential. Weather, predation, and habitat conditions during the breeding and brood-rearing seasons can all significantly impact nest success, hen survival, and poult survival. During the month of August, Department staff and volunteers record the sex and age composition of all flocks of wild turkeys observed during normal travel. Predicting the spread of non-native organisms in the oceans is difficult. Usually there is not enough data on the introduced species over a large enough geographic scale and for a long enough time to develop and test mathematical models. Collecting adequate data takes many people working together to identify a particular species and accurately record information. This project seeks to demonstrate that a large group of people working together can collect enough scientifically valid data for predicting the spread of recently introduced non-native crab species. This project is designed to accomplish two goals. Firstly, it aims to train and validate the efforts of citizen scientists to collect data. Secondly, the data will be used to develop an invasion probability model for two crab species, European green crab (Carcinus maenas), and Asian shore crab (Hemigrapsus sanguineus).
Each class K-8 has chosen a species of local animal to study and collect NatureMapping data. K-spiders, 1st-butterflies and moths, 2nd- birds, 3rd-insects, 4th-reptiles, 5th-wildflowers and weeds, 6th-fossorial mammals. We have produce a native plant garden, a field guide that we add to each year, a school mural. We study on the schoolgrounds, at a local creek area, in a local canyon and on a local mountain so the students can compare common animals and plants from 4 different areas.

Plants of Concern is a citizen science-based rare plant monitoring program in the Chicago Region. Developed in 2001, it how has collected long-term census data on 205 species at 245 sites in 710 separate element occurrences. More than 200 volunteers are involved each year. Threats and invasive species are also recorded. The data is housed in a master Access database and is shared with the Illinois Natural Heritage Database but more importantly with individual landowners to help guide their management decisions.

Birds in Forested Landscapes is a continentwide study to look at the effects of habitat - forest fragmentation, acid rain, recreation - on the breeding success of thrushes and hawks. BFL focuses on seven species of North American thrushes and two forest raptors. BFL is a breeding survey, so fieldwork starts after spring migration and wraps up before migration starts again in late summer. Observers broadcast audio recordings of mobbing calls to elicit a response from local birds, and describe the habitat at three geographic scales to help understand species' habitat requirements for successful breeding.
The ruffed grouse is a forest species widely distributed across New York State. While some grouse are found in more mature forests, the greatest population densities are in younger-aged forests. These preferred habitats are declining as most of New York State's forests grow older, thus resulting in a decline in grouse numbers since the 1960s. Turkey hunters in pursuit of that wary gobbler in the spring are ideally suited for monitoring ruffed grouse during the breeding season. The characteristic sound of a drumming male grouse is as much a part of the spring woods as yelping hens and gobbling toms. DEC currently monitors grouse populations in the fall through the Cooperator Ruffed Grouse Hunting Log where hunters record the number of birds flushed per hour of hunting effort. The Ruffed Grouse Drumming Survey survey provides a harvest-independent index of grouse distribution and abundance during the critical breeding season in the spring. The information from this survey will help us develop an index of grouse distribution and abundance when viewed over time and over large geographic regions. The Northeast Temperate Network monitors forest breeding bird populations at 11 National Parks in the northeast. Breeding birds are a consistently reliable and easily detectable indicator of long-term ecosystem change. Management activities at National Parks in the northeast aimed at preserving historical features, landscapes, or practices may have an impact on natural resources. By observing trends in breeding bird populations, park managers can better understand the effects of these practices on ecosystem processes. Bird watching is an important experience for many park visitors. This monitoring program involves and engages the public in park stewardship.

Great Lakes Worm Watch is a project that requires a half day training session that teaches you about the ecology, extraction, identification, and preservation of earthworms. Samples of worms are collected three times during late summer and early fall at different sites using the liquid mustard extraction method. By working in cooperation with Great Lakes Worm Watch out of Duluth, MN and uploading the data collected to the NatureMapping website, you provide valuable knowledge about the locations of established populations of earthworms in Wisconsin forests.
Project BudBurst engages people from across the United States in the collection of important climate change data based on the timing of leafing and flowering of trees and flowers. Project BudBurst participants take careful observations of the phenological events such as the first leafing, first flower, and first fruit ripening for a variety of plant species including trees, shrubs, flowers, grasses, weeds and ornamentals. Project BudBurst is particularly interested in observations of native plant species. The citizen science observations are reported online to a national database. As a result valuable environmental and climate change information is being collected in a consistent way across the country. Scientists can use this data to learn about the responses of individual plant species to climatic variation locally, regionally, and nationally, and to detect longer-term impacts of climate change by comparing with historical data.

We invite the community to spot, log and map marine species that are uncommon in Tasmania, or along particular parts of our coast, addressing key knowledge gaps in partnership with industry and community. Redmap has proven to be a useful engagement tool to raise awareness about climate change.
