The Portland Children’s Museum will open a new exhibition, “Drip City,” which focuses on water as a precious natural resource that has shaped the region’s geography, weather, and culture. Following an IMLS-funded evaluation and design process, the museum will engage a local fabrication company to construct and install exhibit components that explore concepts in science, engineering, and art. The museum will also engage community members in the design and testing of associated programs that target families and children ages 0 to 7. Museum staff will evaluate all exhibit elements to ensure they are working properly, accessible as intended, and making children’s learning visible to adult audiences.
This final report summarizes the findings from three summative evaluation activities conducted by Serrell & Associates and the Oakland Museum of California with visitors to the newly renovated, reinstalled, and reinterpreted Gallery of California Natural Sciences in April and July 2014: the stay-time study, the cued questionnaire study, and the personal connections study.

This article presents a case study of the design, development and evaluation of a science museum exhibition called Planetary Landscapes: Sculpting the Solar System. The exhibition was created by Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland, California, in collaboration with the artist Ned Kahn. Extensive research of the exhibit, Kachemak Bay, Alaska: An Exploration of People and Place shows it to be popular and effective with visitors on every communication and affective goal set forth in the Exhibit Master Plan. Research also finds that Community Collaborators who helped to create exhibit elements found the experience deeply meaningful and satisfying, meeting every desired cognitive, affective and behavioral outcome established for the collaboration programs. This project comprises the NSF-funded portion of the renovation of a 25,000 sq. ft. natural history gallery called "CHANGING CALIFORNIA." ORIGINAL PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) will develop, implement, and evaluate Hotspot California, a research-based natural science gallery transformation that will explore the educational potential of wildlife dioramas to engage the public in urgent environmental issues. The exhibition will showcase five real places in California that exemplify high biological diversity and complex environmental issues. Innovative approaches to interpretation will emphasize personal connections to these places and infuse static dioramas with visualization technologies that illustrate environmental change over time. The project will explore how such enhancements to dioramas might help visitors develop place-based connections to the natural world. The project has four major deliverables: 1) an innovative 25,000 sq ft gallery exhibition installation featuring five specific California places where California's unique biodiversity is threatened; 2) an application and evaluation of a new participatory exhibit design model involving community contribution, collaboration, and co-design; 3) a two-day "synthesis symposium" for informal science education professionals to consider broad applications of project findings for the field; and 4) "Diorama Dilemmas: A Source book for Museums," synthesizing relevant literature, case studies, and findings from the project's research and evaluation generalizable to the field. The project has evolved since the NSF award, but it remains aligned with its original goals. The team increased the number of California places from five to seven and worked to add a strong human presence within a gallery previously devoted almost entirely to other species. Innovative reuse of OMCA's dioramas and habitat cases continues to be the project's core, but the team's approach has emphasized re-contextualizing rather than revising those exhibits. New elements include iconic artifacts and environments reflecting recent human impact on California, relevant objects from OMCA's art and history collections, digital visualizations of dynamic natural phenomena, and spaces for hands-on investigation. Community focused elements include multiple co-created exhibits and media programs offering inspiring encounters with Californians deeply involved in these seven places.
This proposal requests support for an exhibition on Native cultures of Alaska and Siberia for travel to Native and non- Native communities in rural Alaska. The exhibition consists of 200 small artifacts from Siberian and Alaskan archeological and ethnographic museum collections, archival photographs, Native craft and traditional arts, 20th century graphic arts, and videos. Curriculum packets and educational materials and videos will be prepared for use in the exhibition venues. These instructional materials, including an exhibit catalogue, will be designed to serve as "stand-alone" components as well. The Smithsonian Arctic Studies Center has selected "Crossroads of Continents *RFD Alaska" as a prototype project that will lead toward establishing standards for museum-based educational outreach programs for use in native communities in rural regions where professionally staffed museums usually do not exist. This goal is especially challenging in Alaska, where distances are great, population centers are small, and there are unique problems of transportation, communication, security, and language to be overcome. The project is an ideal one in that much of the basic research for the exhibition has already been accomplished. What is needed now is to develop a Native education component and local initiatives to accompany the core exhibit, and to produce the exhibition and the exhibition catalogue. Once developed, the experience of this project will serve to guide future programs not only in Alaska, but also throughout the Circumpolar North.

This Communicating Research to Public Audiences proposal is based on Cindy Van Dover's NSF-funded research, OCE 0350554, Biogeography and community structure in mussel beds at Pacific hydrothermal vents. The primary deliverable is a traveling science and art exhibit that focuses on the PI's deep sea research of hydrothermal vents and the organisms living in those environments. On several of these expeditions, the PI was accompanied by nature watercolorist/scientific illustrator, Karen Jacobsen. Jacobsen's work, along with animated sculptures of tubeworms by sculptor, Chuck Pell, and displays of dive artifacts will form the body of the exhibition, which will travel to both marine and art museums. Major partners are the North Carolina Maritime Museum and the Muscarelle Museum of the College of William & Mary. Muscarelle will manage the tour. Additional learning products will include an exhibition catalog with essays by Van Dover and others, a naturalist's guide to the exhibition, educational materials for children, video podcasts, docent training materials, and website content

The Exploratorium requests support for four nationally recognized installation artists to develop scientifically relevant, interactive exhibits that will model the movements of waves, clouds, and flowing water and their interplay on and with the Earth's surface. By manipulating or enhancing the behavior of these simulated elemental forces, changing their scale or the perspective from which they are observed, or slowing down or speeding up their natural processes, the artists can bring out characteristics not easily observed, normally. Cross- referenced to other Exploratorium exhibits, these pieces will form the center of a subset of exhibits on the physics of fluid motion and the interaction of elemental forces. They will serve as a starting point for exploring the physical conditions that can cause and support the natural phenomena modeled by the artists. We will develop two different kinds of dissemination materials: 1) A publication for museum professionals, addressing the use of art in presenting science to the public. 2) Printed guides which will designate environmentally relevant exhibits at the Exploratorium dealing with aspects fluid movements in nature. These new "Pathways" will be intended for children and will be made available to students coming on Field Trips and the general public. They will be produced in coordination with two other Pathways on Energy and distributed in packets entitled "Energy and the Environment."
