Journey to Space: Space Station will expand a large-scale traveling exhibition on crewed exploration of space partially funded by NASA and others and will establish a consulting partnership with six NASA visitor centers focused on human space flight and with three additional institutions who have received Space Shuttle Orbiters. SMM will share its experiences developing Journey to Space with Space Center Houston, US Space & Rocket Center, Virginia Air & Space Center, Infinity Science Center, Great Lakes Science Center, Kennedy Space Center, and with the California Science Center, the Intrepid Museum, and the Smithsonian Institution’s Air and Space Museum. SMM will make its IP and plans for exhibit components available to the centers for replication and explore with the centers options for creating a smaller version of Journey to Space that is suitable for the centers’ smaller spaces. Requested funds will support two meetings of the group in Saint Paul, one in fall 2013 and the second after Journey to Space opens in 2015. Additional funds will support prototyping exhibit components of specific interest to the centers and completion of the summative evaluation of the exhibition with the centers’ needs in mind.

Journey to Space will be a large-scale traveling exhibition that simulates a journey to the International Space Station (ISS), allows visitors to explore the physical properties of low gravity environments, and introduces some of the engineering and technology that makes it possible to live and work in space. A collaborative project led by the Science Museum of Minnesota joined by the California Science Center and the three other members of the Science Museum Exhibit Collaborative, the exhibition will encourage museum visitors 1) to immerse themselves in the sights, sounds, and smells that astronauts experience traveling to, and living in, space; 2) to engage as problem solvers with some of the unique engineering challenges that must be solved to support living and working in space; and 3) to experience life aboard the International Space Station interpreted through the voices of engineers, scientists, and astronauts. In addition to the exhibition, the project will include a public website and a two-year youth program for underserved teens that will result in a three-day Celebration of Space Exploration Chautauqua aimed especially at underserved families in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The exhibition will tour to twelve major science museums across North America and reach upwards of three and a quarter million families, adults, teachers, and students over six years.

Girlstart will implement a comprehensive suite of informal STEM education programs that directly reach 2,500 4th-8th grade girls and their parents. This project will increase interest in and understanding of STEM disciplines by inspiring and engaging girls and their parents; it will establish linkages between formal and informal STEM education; and it will stimulate parents to support girls’ STEM learning endeavors by becoming informed proponents for high-quality STEM education. Over the course of 48 months—from fall 2012 to fall 2016—Girlstart seeks to develop new, robust, NASA-rich curriculum for its nationally-replicated Girlstart Summer Camp program, as well as year-long curriculum for its recognized Girlstart After School program. Curricula will be prepared for a range of ages and abilities and include links to electives, higher education majors, and careers. Girlstart will also conduct public and community STEM education programs throughout the region in NASA content areas. In addition, Girlstart will develop relevant, hands-on exhibits at the Girlstart STEM Center in Austin, Texas.
Through this project, Girlstart will:  (1) Increase facility and mastery in STEM skills. (2) Increase participants’ interest in pursuing STEM subjects and careers. (3) Increase participants’ understanding and mastery of the scientific method and the engineering design process as systems for problem solving and scientific discovery. (4) Increase participants’ understanding that there are multiple applications of STEM in everyday life. (5) Increase participants’ understanding of higher education as key to expanding career options. (6) Increase participants’ confidence and interest in conducting STEM activities. (7) Increase participants’ awareness of STEM careers.

The National Mining Hall of Fame’s newest exhibit, Expanding Boundaries: Harrison Schmitt and the New Mining Frontier is an innovative look at the future of the extraction industry and a unique opportunity to expand the imagination of current and future generations. With the help from the experts at NASA, the new exhibit communicates information to inspire excitement and convey benefits of space exploration as it relates to the mining industry and our everyday lives, as well as to commemorate and honor Harrison Schmitt by sharing his contributions and experiences to foster interest and exploration of STEM disciplines. Through four, user-friendly, interactive displays the exhibit achieves the following objectives: (1) Provide factual information such as the Apollo missions, geology of the moon, theories of the moons origins, cultural interpretations of the moon, and other general moon information. (2) Compare historic earth-based mining, lunar mining, and future prospects for extra-terrestrial mining. (3) Connect with modern, technological sensibility through interactive, educational and gaming elements. (4) Dedicate the exhibit to Harrison Schmitt and celebrate his story through artifacts, audio-visuals, and stories. (5) Display lunar and other extra-terrestrial related minerals (i.e. meteorites, etc.).

Engineering for Space Exploration will comprise three major sections of Journey to Space, a 12,000 square foot traveling exhibition about crewed space exploration for families and adults that will travel to more than nine large science centers and museums across North America over 6-1/2 years. The Science Museum of Minnesota (SMM) will develop and circulate the exhibition in collaboration with the California Science Center in Los Angeles, the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, the Museum of Science in Boston, and the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry in Portland. SMM will also collaborate with NASA visitor centers such as the US Space & Rocket Center. The project will develop compelling exhibit experiences that make personal connections to space exploration for a large audience and help them understand the nature of space and the engineering development that is needed to support and sustain humans in exploring space beyond low earth orbit.

Engage and Equip to Empower: Building a S-STEM Generation (E³) is a two-part program that seeks to educate the public about living, working, and doing science aboard the International Space Station and to provide professional development in STEM for formal and informal educators. Working with Science Museum of Minnesota, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center will create a new interactive exhibition, Space Station: Science in Orbit, that will give more than 500,000 annual museum visitors an immersive experience of what daily and professional life is like aboard the ISS, and how the ISS is supported by NASA back on earth, using the real voices of astronauts and engineers. In addition, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center will host STEMcon, an annual four-day STEM professional development program for educators, focused on best practices and innovation in hands-on, experiential STEM learning. Funds from this award will be used to provide tuition and travel to 70 educators per year for four years from the five-state service area of Marshall Space Flight Center. The U.S. Space & Rocket Center aims to recruit at least 40% of these educators from underserved/underprivileged schools. Both elements of the program seek to improve public knowledge of NASA’s work in science research and human spaceflight, as well as inform the public about the myriad careers involved in NASA missions. STEMcon aims to foster communication and teamwork between formal and informal educators across the country, while informing educators of resources that are available for curriculum development or classroom use.

Earth from Space highlights state-of-the-art NASA technology, in particular, the suite of Earth observing satellites orbiting our planet, the data they collect, and how people are using these data for research and applications. Participants learn how NASA EOS data is collected through remote sensing systems, recognize the connection between this data and the area in which they live, and recognize the relevance and value of NASA data for understanding changes in the Earth related to where they live. The project informs K–12 students and lifelong learners of our increasingly advanced technological society and prepare students to enter the STEM-related workforce with content in oceanography, geology, climatology, glaciology, geography, and meteorology. Content is presented through hands-on exhibits and dynamic demonstrations using spherical display systems at OMSI’s main museum location and through a travelling program at rural libraries, schools, and other outreach venues throughout Oregon.

The Discover Aeronautics and Aerospace Gallery (Discover) engages students, families and the general public in the STEM research that makes major accomplishments in space and aeronautics possible. Great Lakes Science Center, home of NASA Glenn Visitor Center, developed the gallery in collaboration with NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) to provide interactive learning opportunities, amazing NASA artifacts, and multimedia experiences that encourages them to discover more about STEM. The overarching project goal is to engage visitors in the important research of NASA GRC, and summative evaluation concluded that Discover is an immersive environment of interactive exhibits that increases visitors’ levels of knowledge about aeronautic and aerospace research. The Gallery successfully raises the profile of NASA GRC, and emphasizes the importance of research and experimentation for the challenges of flight – in the air and in space.

Discover is divided into mini-laboratory settings—Aeronautics Lab, Materials Lab, Rocket Lab and Power Lab—and the Discover Stage, an ideal environment for demonstrations, and presentations by astronauts and aerospace experts. When not in use for live productions, the stage hosts a video tour of NASA GRC’s impressive labs and test chambers. Visitors can experiment with a microgravity drop tower, plan a space mission, analyze slow-motion footage from a ballistic impact facility, see how motion and sound are affected by the vacuum of space, and more. Discover engages over 300,000 visitors a year in the STEM research necessary for flight. As part of the NASA Glenn Visitor Center, the Gallery exemplifies the Science Center’s dedication to sharing NASA content to inform, engage, and inspire students, educators, and the public. Discover immerses visitors in the exciting challenges and rewards of space exploration, and is a place of inspiration for tomorrow’s scientific leadership and workforce.

Curious Scientific Investigators (CSI): Flight Adventures immerses children and families in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines. Launched in February 2012, the project supports NASA’s Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate (ARMD), focusing on “innovative ideas to convey the fundamentals of flight, flight technology, and NASA’s role in aeronautics.” The project’s audience includes youth ages 6-18 and the Museum’s more than 1 million annual visitors of all ages. The project’s lead agency, The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis (Museum), developed and implemented the project in Indianapolis in partnership with the Academy of Model Aeronautics and NASA Dryden Flight Research Center. The project’s goals focus on inspiring children and families to develop an interest in STEM concepts and learn about NASA’s role in science and aeronautics research and the evolution of flight, and on engaging and educating them through inquiry-based programs that facilitate understanding of STEM concepts and knowledge and NASA’s contributions to flight. Centered on an original Multimedia Planetarium Show on flight, Flight Adventures, the Museum designed several components, all of which complement the show and the messages it conveys. Among these components are an exhibit area composed of a movable wind tunnel, a display of models, low- and high-tech interactives; a Unit of Study; a TV show, Wings Over Indiana; a website; and a variety of educational and family programs.

In 1917, the French artist Marcel Duchamp submitted a store-bought porcelain urinal turned on its back and signed R. Mutt to the hanging committee of the Society for Independent Artists in New York. The object, titled Fountain, was never displayed, although the society had pledged itself to show any work by an artist who paid the entry fee. An anonymous article in The Blind Man, a journal published by Duchamp and his friends, argued that whether Mr. Mutt with his own hands made the fountain or not has no importance. He chose it. This study evaluates the Living Land Living Sea exhibit at the Royal British Columbia Museum, with specific attention to gathering data related to visitor response to dioramas. The results of this study indicated that small but significant amounts of knowledge gain did occur upon visiting the Living Land Living Sea gallery, that attitudinal change was not measured, and that exhibit type clearly affects attracting power and holding power.
