Broader Impacts and ISE (2015)
In April 2015, CAISE convened representatives from NSF-funded centers and large facilities with ISE professionals, evaluators and social science researchers for two days of exploration of the needs, opportunities and challenges of those researching, designing and evaluating education, engagement and broader impacts strategies. Participants also included leaders from the National Alliance for Broader Impacts (NABI) the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Center for Public Engagement with Science and Technology and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). The presentations that framed and informed the working meeting included:
Dyad Presentations
- Collaborative Center Networks & Large Facilities, Monya Ruffin, Emory University and William Katzman, Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) Science Education Center
- Perspectives from 15 Years Fostering Collaborations Between Science Museums and NSF-Funded Research Centers, Carol Lynn Alpert, Museum of Science Boston
- Working with ISE Institutions and Networks , Dennis Schatz, Pacific Science Center
- From the front lines of the science of science communication, Jessica Sickler, Lifelong Learning Group
- What does the "science of science communication" tell us? John Besley, Michigan State University
- ISE Learning Research and Evaluation, John Falk, Oregon State University and Karen Peterman, Karen Peterman Consulting
Discussions and ideas generated at the convening informedĀ a white paper on existing and potential strategies and collaborations that link outreach, engagement and broader impacts work with informal STEM education.
This Venn diagram represents the (sometimes overlapping) roles that convening participants identified playing in the broader impacts, communication engagement and education landscape.
