Topics of Discussion at the 2012 ISE Media Convening

Prior to the 2012 ISE PI Meeting, a group of science media producers and other stakeholders met for a one-day convening to discuss emergent topics in informal science education (ISE) media. The following are some of the questions that were addressed:

Discipline-Specific Discussion

Each discussant group includes attendees from a particular media discipline, plus an evaluator and a National Science Foundation (NSF) Program Officer.

  1. What are the major challenges of your discipline?
  2. What are the most important findings from your own research and evaluation and what else would you like to know?
  3. What have been the most fruitful collaborations with other media disciplines and other educational partners, such as museums, schools, etc.
  4. What are the most important opportunities you see for the future of your field?

Cross-Disciplinary Discussion

Each group includes attendees from multiple disciplines, plus an evaluator and an NSF Program Officer.

  1. What challenges facing STEM media that are common to all disciplines? Capture on post-its and prioritize.
  2. What service could a STEM Media Organization offer to meet these challenges? What would you like such an organization to accomplish?
  3. At an a multi-day STEM Media Conference, what would you like to see on the agenda, including featured speakers, types of events, etc.
  4. What organizations and conferences might be a model for a STEM Media Conference?
  5. What are the most important Action Steps? (Rank by urgency.)
