This report presents and analyzes the findings from a front-end evaluation conducted by Randi Korn & Associates (RK&A) regarding the concept for "Safari Adventure," an exhibition being developed at the Bronx Zoo by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in Bronx, NY. The aim of Safari Adventure will be to provide better connections to nature for families in our community and foster a life-long sense of environmental stewardship. The exhibit concept was born of the issue that, today, there exists a greater need to connect people to nature than ever before, a topic especially relevant for our community—part of the largest urban population in the United States. The study was undertaken to explore visitors’ understanding of key messages and interest in potential exhibit components, outlined along the following objectives: 1. Identify aspects of the proposed exhibition that most and least interest visitors and why. 2. Identify the proposed messages and exhibit strategies that best help family groups: understand, appreciate and connect with key exhibition themes. 3. Explore visitors' experiences with and assumptions about intergenerational learning within the context of the zoo and proposed new exhibition. 4. Identify any connections children and families see between Safari Adventure and their own personal experiences with wildlife and nature. 5. Gauge potential differences between children ages three to six and children ages seven to ten in regard to their reactions to the proposed exhibit. The front-end evaluation for Safari Adventure reveals many findings pertinent to the motivations and interests of family groups that may further guide the development of the proposed exhibition.
